Basil

A basil plant in the heat of the summer, and it's quite a hardy plant. Two cuttings have been taken already. I am a fan of good old Terra-cotta pots, this one is a bit fancy, as you can see, with a rolled top edge and carvings. This is part of my tiny herb "garden" and the third potted herb I've shown you. I have always wanted a basil plant for various reasons.
1. It's pretty
2. For it's culinary uses (though I'm not a cook)
3. For it's herbal medicine uses (as essential oil, tinctures, dried leaves)
.... first described in a Chinese herbal around 1060 C.E, and has been used for stomach spasms and kidney ailments....
....the essential oil is antibacterial, and drops of basil oil may relieve ear infections. European scientists are investigating the use of basil oil as treatment for antibiotic resistant infections....
.... dried basil leaf can be added directly to food or drunk as a tea (1/2 teaspoon of dried herb steeped for 10 minutes in 1 cup of boiling water in a closed container) to relieve flatulence and fullness....

I haven't yet ordered from RMH but I like the herb profiles and their blog. I will be ordering supplies by the end of the week. I'll let you know how it all goes.
Thanks for the visit!
